Paintings and Photos Will Mingle...

Just a little look ahead to our next show...

Captured Dreams and Altered Realities
Opening Reception Friday September 17th 5-7 PM

Two New England artists will fill Lucy's Art Emporium with their unique visions. Though their approaches are very different, Andy Mellen and Sylvea Johnson have a shared knack for seeing the world in a whole new way.

Portsmouth artist Sylvea Johnson creates mindscapes from vibrantly colored mixed media. Her paintings pulse with light and color, taking the viewer from the surface deep into the space behind. Johnson has referred to her pieces as “visual riddles”, a fitting description for pieces which at first seem abstract but then beg the viewer to find shapes and meaning hidden inside.

Andy Mellen takes familiar scenes and objects into the realm of the imagination through various photographic techniques. Using a toy film camera with four lenses and four shutters, he captures scenes of a dilapidated neighborhood. Each of the four shots is just a bit different, causing horizon lines to shift and leaving the viewer feeling that they are moving through the scene. Mellen brings a background in theater set design and directing into the darkroom, giving his photos the feel of a still from an independent movie.

The show will run from September 8th through October 3rd with an opening reception on Friday September 17th from 5-7 PM. The reception is free and open to the public who are invited to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.
