A New Owner for the Shop!

Wonderful news! The brick and mortar part of Lucy's will have a new owner.

Jennifer Blosser will be taking over the shop mid-March. You will still find all of your favorite artists here along with Jennifer's new visions to make the shop even more fabulous.

My last day in the shop will be March 8th. We'll close for about a week and then you can visit Jennifer in her store. Thank you all for your continued support!

Spooky Spectacular

Lucy's Art Emporium embraces the fun of the Halloween season with its group show Spooky Spectacular. A selection of Lucy's artists have let their imaginations wander toward the creepy, crawly and mysterious in a variety of media.

Newmarket artist Stacey Durand will show small drawings of chill-worthy creatures as well as adorable crocheted pumpkins. Jennifer Omand of Squarecat Comics will bring her usual quirky humor to pen and inks like "Wolfman and Piggie" while other artists will use collage, paint and fabric to bring life to bats, cats, shadows and full moons.

This show will run from October 3rd through the 30th with an opening reception Friday October 4th 5:30-7:30 PM. The opening is free and open to the public, light refreshments will be served. This will also be the night of the Dover art walk- take a stroll to other galleries. Lucy's is located at 303 Central Avenue in Dover (just across from city hall). Lucy's Welcomes Carey Armstrong-Ellis

Line Dance, Oil

It is impossible to keep from smiling when enjoying the artwork of Maine illustrator, Carey Armstrong-Ellis. Ellis brings a cheerful and humorous touch to everything she creates.

Carey is truly a multi-talented artist who masterfully divides her time between painting, illustration and whimsical fiber art. Her illustrations have been published in a variety of wonderful children's books including several written by Carey herself.

Happy Bees, Eating Swiss Cheese
from Happy Bees by Arthur Yorinks
Gouache & Colored Pencil

The show at Lucy's will feature originals in oil, gouache and colored pencil and fabric collage. Lucy's regulars will recognize Carey's homage to the Muppets prints as well as originals of  Line Dance and Attack of the Zombie Heads. In each of these pieces, Carey has set up a still life of action figures and toys and painted them as though they were living subjects. In doing so, she takes our childhood memories, adds a storyline and creates a charming piece of artwork.

Take a gander at Carey's website, www.slugworksrocks.com where she shares lots of her fabulous artwork, views of her studio and other fun treats!

September 4th - 29th at Lucy's

Local Artists Share Views of the World

Coming Soon...

Four New England artists will share their paintings and photographs of subjects from across the globe. From watercolors of the Maine landscape to photographs of Romanian cemeteries, the work in this show will inspire wanderlust.

Philip Lepage of Newmarket will display his beautiful photographs of Romania. These images are steeped in history and amazing architecture. LePage captures his subjects in fantastic color and composition. Painter and illustrator, Gretchen Hatfield, also takes the viewer to Europe with charming paintings of France and Bulgaria.

Maine watercolorist Nanci Nason captures the majesty of the New England landscape in her small works. She finds the natural environment, especially water, inspirational. Dover painter Nick Ellard will display works inspired by his travels both distant and local. Each of the four artists finds beauty and grandeur in intriguing and often unexpected corners of the world.

The show will run from November 9th through December 4th with an opening reception on Friday November 12th from 5-7 PM. The reception is free and open to the public who are invited to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.

Local Landscapes Show Draws to a Close

It's the last week to see "Local Landscapes" by Gretchen Hatfield and Daisy Adams. The two Dover painters have captured familiar scenes which are truly bursting with hometown pride.

Hatfield's view of the Central Ave Barber Shop tips its hat to Norman Rockwell in both subject and charm... but this is really our town. Hatfield has not imagined this scene, merely encapsulated it. The same can be said of her portrait of the Dover Mounted Police and City Hall.

Adams' approach could be seen as a bit tongue-in-cheek due to some of her seemingly odd subject choices. But she truly sees beauty and present day nostalgia in the welcoming glow of Smiley's and the lure of Trophy's Wing Night. This is our home and we love it.

Hatfield: City Hall 12" x 12" acrylic on panel $60

Adams: Trophy's Wing Night acrylic on paper $55

Lucy's Under Construction

I've always thought that it's so intriguing and mysterious when new businesses block out their windows so you can't see the preliminary set up... and now I got to do it myself!

While Lucy's gets dolled up for the big opening, Statler and Waldorf will be catching the attention of those passing by. (These were actually our Halloween costumes this year!) If Lucy's can get two thumbs up from these old curmudgeons, we must be doing something right!

Thanks to Matt for helping me to pull up all of the old carpeting even though he just got off a red-eye flight from the West Coast! What a good friend.
