Local Artists Share Views of the World

Coming Soon...

Four New England artists will share their paintings and photographs of subjects from across the globe. From watercolors of the Maine landscape to photographs of Romanian cemeteries, the work in this show will inspire wanderlust.

Philip Lepage of Newmarket will display his beautiful photographs of Romania. These images are steeped in history and amazing architecture. LePage captures his subjects in fantastic color and composition. Painter and illustrator, Gretchen Hatfield, also takes the viewer to Europe with charming paintings of France and Bulgaria.

Maine watercolorist Nanci Nason captures the majesty of the New England landscape in her small works. She finds the natural environment, especially water, inspirational. Dover painter Nick Ellard will display works inspired by his travels both distant and local. Each of the four artists finds beauty and grandeur in intriguing and often unexpected corners of the world.

The show will run from November 9th through December 4th with an opening reception on Friday November 12th from 5-7 PM. The reception is free and open to the public who are invited to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.

During the month of October, Lucy's Art Emporium will host the bold, colorful artwork of Carol Walker-Morin. Morin likens her creative process to meditation, explaining that she trusts her intuitive sense of design and composition while playing with color and form.

Walker-Morin's work draws on the beauty of nature. She uses acrylic and oil pastel to create achetypal images of trees, labyrinths and the human form. These images radiate peace and positive energy.

The show will run from October 6th through November 6th with an opening reception on Friday October 8th from 5-7 PM. The reception is free and open to the public who are invited to meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments.

Paintings and Photos Will Mingle...

Just a little look ahead to our next show...

Captured Dreams and Altered Realities
Opening Reception Friday September 17th 5-7 PM

Two New England artists will fill Lucy's Art Emporium with their unique visions. Though their approaches are very different, Andy Mellen and Sylvea Johnson have a shared knack for seeing the world in a whole new way.

Portsmouth artist Sylvea Johnson creates mindscapes from vibrantly colored mixed media. Her paintings pulse with light and color, taking the viewer from the surface deep into the space behind. Johnson has referred to her pieces as “visual riddles”, a fitting description for pieces which at first seem abstract but then beg the viewer to find shapes and meaning hidden inside.

Andy Mellen takes familiar scenes and objects into the realm of the imagination through various photographic techniques. Using a toy film camera with four lenses and four shutters, he captures scenes of a dilapidated neighborhood. Each of the four shots is just a bit different, causing horizon lines to shift and leaving the viewer feeling that they are moving through the scene. Mellen brings a background in theater set design and directing into the darkroom, giving his photos the feel of a still from an independent movie.

The show will run from September 8th through October 3rd with an opening reception on Friday September 17th from 5-7 PM. The reception is free and open to the public who are invited to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments.

Local Landscapes Show Draws to a Close

It's the last week to see "Local Landscapes" by Gretchen Hatfield and Daisy Adams. The two Dover painters have captured familiar scenes which are truly bursting with hometown pride.

Hatfield's view of the Central Ave Barber Shop tips its hat to Norman Rockwell in both subject and charm... but this is really our town. Hatfield has not imagined this scene, merely encapsulated it. The same can be said of her portrait of the Dover Mounted Police and City Hall.

Adams' approach could be seen as a bit tongue-in-cheek due to some of her seemingly odd subject choices. But she truly sees beauty and present day nostalgia in the welcoming glow of Smiley's and the lure of Trophy's Wing Night. This is our home and we love it.

Hatfield: City Hall 12" x 12" acrylic on panel $60

Adams: Trophy's Wing Night acrylic on paper $55

PRINTMAKERS show at Lucy's

PRINTMAKERS

May 4th - June 6th
Opening Reception Friday May 7 5-7 PM

Lucy's Art Emporium will display the work of three printmakers during the month of May. Laura Utley, Deloris White and Erin Landry Fowler work in various methods including drypoint, monotype and linocut.

White, Director of Fine Arts at Berwick Academy, works in intaglio. Her masterful prints of flowers and animals are created by etching metal plates with tiny lines and textures.

The bold linocuts of Landry Fowler bring a modern spin to the age old process of printmaking. Thickly outlined subjects are framed by just the right amount of bold color. Her portraits of modern day models carrying laundry or planting a garden capture the beauty of everyday life.

Utley, a Dover resident and recent graduate of Plymouth State University, creates one-of-a-kind abstract pieces using foam printing plates. Working in layers, Utley combines shape and color to invent vibrant worlds full of depth and movement.
